Today I will talk about "double" optimization: how to effectively defragment the hard disk in Windows Vista and 7 operating systems and how to defragment their registry for even more shiny work of the computer. The combination of these methods gives a completely tangible result.

Obsolete Windows XP will not be considered, because there are a lot of materials on this topic. But with Vista and Windows 7 there are small spaces that I will try to fill. The technique should be correct also for Windows 8, but it requires verification.

What is defragmentation?

About this I have written more than once and not two in articles on a related topic. In short: it is optimization of the location of files on the hard disk for faster work with them. I specifically did not defrag for about a month on my laptop to get this screenshot (from the Defragged program):

As you can see in the picture, 16% of the files are not optimally divided into pieces (red marks). Green stripes are places on the map of the disk where the files are arranged in order, without fragmentation into parts. Also there is a purple area - these are the locations of the MFT, the Main File Table, where all the information about folders, files, their properties, attendant information, small files. A light brown bar denotes a swap file - what it is, written here. But this in this case is not so important.

Between all the data are spaces of free space. If you write a file that is larger than the gap, you'll have to write it down somewhere else. That is, a non-optimal allocation of free space creates problems, hindering the process of writing data to the hard disk.

Due to the defragmentation of the hard disk mechanisms it will be easier and faster to "pinch" the area where the file is located and read it.
Basically, if you do not want to delve into the whole process, for normal defragmentation, it's enough to leave the computer turned on for the night: regular defragmentation is planned in Vista and 7 at 1:00 am. Naturally, at this time it is better not to use a computer.
